Do You Have Skin Cancer of the Eyelid?

Image
We recently had a patient come in, post-op. During the exam, we noticed a small nodule on the edge of their lower eyelid. It turned out to be a   basal cell carcinoma —a common type of skin cancer. Because of its location, we needed to remove it carefully to preserve the delicate function and structure of the eyelid. What is Basal Cell Carcinoma on the Eyelid? These cancers often appear as small nodules or bumps that can go unnoticed at first, but early de...

Case of the Day: Branch Retinal Vein Occlusion (BRVO)

Welcome to Case of the Day! An elderly patient presented with a sudden loss of vision, which prompted an eye examination. Upon evaluation, we diagnosed the patient with branch retinal vein occlusion. Sudden vision loss can sometimes be attributed to this condition. Essentially, blood is pumped into the retina by an artery, and veins drain it out through the optic nerve. In certain cases, especially in individuals with hypertension or atherosclerosis, the artery can cross over the vein, obstructing blood flow. People with diabetes, high cholesterol, hardened arteries, or those with atherosclerosis and hypertension are at higher risk for this condition. If you experience sudden vision loss, it’s important to monitor your blood pressure and ensure that your blood isn’t too thick. Blood work is necessary to check your blood count, and it's essential to keep your ...
